Persian Medicine is one of the most famous branches of complementary and alternative medicine disciplines which is grounded in the four humors concept: phlegm, blood, yellow bile and black bile. Persian Medicine roots back to over 8000 years B.C and has been started in the old Persia and then has been developed further in Greek. Avicenna is one of the most famous pioneers of traditional Iranian Medicine. His book “Qanoon” was taught over 700 years in European medical schools and it was translated to more than eighty different languages. In recent years many medical universities in Iran have started traditional medicine courses.

Isfahan University of Medical Sciences is a university of higher education in basic and clinical medical sciences. It is one of the most prestigious Iranian medical schools. The courses of Iranian Traditional Medicine and its department were stated on 2012 in this university. Currently, the department is working with two faculty members and 10 PhD candidates. The main concepts of Iranian Traditional Medicine including temperament and basic concepts, the essential factors of disease prevention and healthy life style, semiology, physiopathology of disease and treatment methods including herbal therapies, cupping, etc are thought in this department. Many educational courses and programs are also managed by this department which contains important theoretical and practical trainings for general physicians and specialists which are interested in complementary practice. Several research projects are currently being done by PhD candidates in this department which includes clinical trials on evaluating the effectiveness and safety of certain medicinal herbs derived from Iranian Traditional Medicine on disease treatment or prevention. The goal of this department is to make scientific evidences for Persian Medicine concepts and to introduce these valuable concepts to the scientific world.
